Crew State & Risk Model (CSRM)

Description

Physiological inputs and outputs are adequately known for International Space Station (ISS) mission scenarios and tasks, however, planetary exploration missions will be significantly different in terms of systems, tasks, and environments. The communication latency between Earth and Mars will necessitate a level of Extravehicular Activity (EVA) autonomy well beyond our current capability. The Crew State and Risk Model (CSRM) is a collection of core physiologic models and will provide individualized physical and cognitive crewmember state monitoring and predictions during an EVA in real-time. The CSRM will be made up of seven main models, including metabolic rate; inspired carbon dioxide (CO2); thermal; fatigue (cognitive and physical); traverse; hydration, nutrition, and waste management; and decompression sickness models. CSRM is a core component of the Personalized EVA Informatics and Decision Support (PersEIDS) and is critical for large scale mission planning and ConOps and will serve as the basis for making biomedical risk assessments/decisions for exploration EVA and aid in the development of architecture, EVA planning and execution.

The Crew State and Risk Model (CSRM) project will enable autonomous decision support on crew health and performance during Extravehicular Activities (EVA)s on Mars where no real-time support from Mission Control Center (MCC) or ground personnel will be available.
