This IRAD research will allow us to be better prepared to write a more competitive proposal of the Bulk Elemental Composition Analyzer (BECA) instrument for the upcoming Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) opportunity expected in Fall 2024. Although BECA‘s Pulsed Neutron Generator (PNG) assembly and testing is complete, it still requires a thermal vacuum (TVAC) test before it can properly achieve TRL 6 for the Moon. We also wish to perform experiments out at the Gamma ray Neutron Test Facility (GNTF) at the Goddard Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory (GGAO) to study whether CLYC thermal and epithermal neutron detectors can be used as part of BECA given the high neutron rate from the PNG.
Since this proposed work is all geared toward being ready for the upcoming Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) proposal, the time horizon for follow-on mission funding is immediate. In addition to LTV, this instrument will be ready for many PRISM/CLPS opportunities to explore the Moon. Finally, this proposal prepares BECA to be ready for inclusion on Endurance-A as well.
