Earth Independent Operations Mission Management Activity (EIO-MM)

Description

In 2023, the Mars Campaign Office established a highly integrated portfolio of technology development activities focused on enabling Earth Independent Operations (EIO) for the Moon and Mars. The goal of the Earth Independent Operations domain is to advance the technologies needed to ensure that the crew can effectively respond to on-board anomalies in the absence of real-time ground support. The Mission Management (MM) Portfolio focuses on the software needed to execute conventional fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR). Related to Vehicle Systems, this Project focuses on the ‘what could go wrong’, leveraging software and crew-procedures to mitigate those risks during Lunar and Mars missions. Extensible to vehicle management tasking when the system is in a nominal state.

The Mission Management Portfolio is split into the following projects:

MM-1 Integrated Habitat Simulation Development: Responsible for the formulation and proof-of-concept of a federated simulation of models of ECLSS systems.

MM-2 Mission Management Emulator: A fault detection, management, and response capability sufficient to emulate a mission manager. Potentially based on Gateway VSM.

MM-3 Autonomous Procedures: The development of FDIR routines related to testbeds or simulated hardware for incorporation into AR development and testing.

MM-4 Crew-Involved Procedure Development: Capture and develop crew-led procedures in response to known faults by using conventional mission and fault management techniques.

Benefits

This activity includes the development of a federated modeling and simulation infrastructure and the implementation of multi-physics models of the ECLSS systems contained in the ECLSS Ground Testbed (EGT) at Marshall Space Flight Center. This simulation will be used to generate simulated telemetry for injected faults that place the hardware in configurations that will damage EGT hardware.

This activity authors realistic crew-involved procedures for recovery of known faults for the EGT suitable for execution during simulations of EIO operations. Crew-involved procedures executed by the mission manager will be used to develop crew interface prototypes. Simple crew-involved procedures will be assessed for conversion to automated procedures.
