Project Objective
The Collaborative Agreement Notice (CAN) between NASA and Victory Solutions had the primary goal to provide the Space Nuclear Propulsion Program (SNP) support in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Configuration Management & Data Management (CMDM).
Project Description
The SNP program was selected for this CAN because it is a newer, early lifecycle program. Additionally, an unofficial project review on SNP was being considered for late 2024. A major point of the CAN on SNP was to use digital resources to support review preparation. However, due to program reorganization, this review was rescheduled to a future date beyond the CAN period of performance. This led to a refocusing of primary CAN goals on SNP.
A new CAN goal was outlined to digitize existing data to support future reviews in a model-based way. This work was done in support of ongoing SNP program MBSE activities in design maturation, risk assessment, and trade study tracking to assist in decision making. A secondary CAN objective was to implement use of an existing data exchange capability from a technology effort created in 2023, OpenPDM.
Project Results and Conclusions
A principal accomplishment of the CAN was the generation of SysML models for two key SNP planning artifacts, the SNP Grand Strategy Map and the Technology Maturation Plan. The CAN team then leveraged these models to generate alternate views of this data, including tables and matrices that map the corresponding elements of these models, and establish traceability between them. Additionally, working with the SNP MBSE team, the CAN team started work on importing IMS data into the system model, and explored potential concepts for risk analysis. The SNP MBSE team further supported the CAN by establishing a data structure in their system model for the CAN team’s use in demonstrating connectivity between the system model in Teamwork Cloud (TWC) and Jira using OpenPDM. The CAN team held a workshop with OpenPDM to demonstrate data exchange capabilities using OpenPDM for the first time.
In response to MSFC and Agency Digital Transformation goals and objectives, the CAN served as a way to support an existing MBSE team as they developed model-based products as well as to grow and demonstrate tools that could be used across programs and NASA centers to implement digital transformation. Having validated and accessible toolsets readily available to teams seeking to introduce model-based processes is necessary for digital transformation at the agency.
