Low SWaP-C RemoteID Device for UAS

Description
Currently, KalScott is executing a Phase II SBIR project where Broadcast RemoteID devices and Network Remote ID devices are being developed for use in small UAVs, to enable them to report their ID, position and other relevant data. Also, in previous work, we had explored the potential for a version of the Broadcast Remote ID (BRID) devices to be used for wildland fire management operations. Seamless communications are a key hurdle for wildland fire management, and we have already demonstrated the ability to move data from ground and air assets and personnel via an airborne data link, using our BRID devices. We now propose to further develop the BRID devices for the wildland fire management application, and to test the entire chain under a 12-month Phase II-E effort. We have secured matching investment for this Phase II-E (see letter in the package).In a parallel effort, we will be developing a similar system based on the Network Remote ID device for a Department of Defense customer (seeletter of support from this customer).
Benefits
This technology can improve the safety of Next Gen airspace operations where manned traffic will mingle with unmanned aircraft and air taxis. NASA is working on several initiatives such as the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), Aerial Port, and High Density Vertiports (HDV), where this technology may serve as a bridge between several different communications protocols. Non-NASA applications include equipping autonomous airfield equipment to enable deconfliction with taxying aircraft, operating as an organic air traffic monitoring system in remote areas or in disaster zones, providing interoperability and cross-communications in aerial firefighting, etc. This system can be the aerial node for IoT implementations in emerging Smart Cities programs.
