High Accuracy Time Synchronization, Cloud-Based Data Management and Visualization Enhancements for Real Time Data Telemetry

Description
Boom's Testing and Telemetry Product Suite is a high-efficiency, high-volume, very low-latency flight test data acquisition, data management and analysis software package. It comprises an air-to-ground data telemetry acquisition, processing and visualization system, an automated flight test and data management system and an automated sensor validation subsystem. It is capable of integrating multiple sources of telemetry and possesses a flexible modular architecture, making it widely applicable to a range of flight test environments. At present, OEMs develop proprietary telemetry software, and while some COTS options exist, they lack flexibility in implementing custom functions, incur high costs for scalability, and lack security and reliability. Boom’s Product Suite improves upon these systems through multiple novel features and capabilities. The Product Suite has been under development for more than 5 years at Boom, and the following specific features are proposed to be implemented in Phase I: - Establishing Time Synchronization across Asynchronous DAS - Preflight Instrument Validation using Historical Trends - Cloud-based Data Storage - Visualization Utility Development Anticipated Phase I deliverables include a mid-term and a final report describing the architecture in further detail as well as successes, challenges and opportunities for further development. Phase II deliverables (if awarded) would include maturation to TRL6, including validation and demonstration during a flight test event. Completed standalone software will also be delivered. The Product Suite will offer capabilities that far exceed existing COTS flight test data acquisition, processing, and display software. Further development of the Product Suite, as well as validation, demonstration and delivery of software under a potential Phase II award, would enable NASA and the aerospace industry to conduct flight research more effectively and rise to the challenges of cutting-edge R&D activities.
Benefits
Deployment of the Boom Supersonic Testing and Telemetry Product Suite within the NASA SBIR program allows NASA to leverage five years of significant investment and development efforts by Boom to advance and bring to market state-of-the-art flight test and measurement technologies. The low-latency, high volume, flexible architecture of Boom’s Testing and Telemetry Product Suite enables it to be deployed on a variety of flight test applications (including both low-speed and high-speed flight regimes), lab/bench-scale testing, simulator outputs, manufacturing testing/diagnostic evaluations as well as operational health monitoring. Specifically, NASA’s Integrated Aviation Systems Program (IASP) and associated research activities would benefit from integration and utilization of the Product Suite with IASP’s focus on maturing technologies for future air vehicles and operational systems. While originally designed for Boom’s XB-1 demonstrator program, the Product Suite can be deployed across experimental flight testing programs, capable of supporting a variety of flight regimes and vehicle types within the NASA Flight Demonstrations and Capabilities (FDC) Project. In particular, the Quesst program and its X-59 low-boom demonstrator would directly benefit from the capabilities offered within the Suite. The Suite could also have relevant applications for the new Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate Flight Data Portal (AFDP), enhancing capabilities for flight test data acquisition and post-flight data analysis and review. The Boom Supersonic Testing and Telemetry Product Suite may be deployed in a variety of applications beyond NASA R&D projects, ranging from flight testing air-to-ground data capture, lab/bench-scale testing, flight certification data collection, and fleet airframe and engine health monitoring and predictive maintenance scheduling. Presently, telemetry data processing software are either proprietary developments by OEMs or commercial off-the-shelf solutions which have limited customization options and are expensive to deploy at scale. The Telviz module within the Suite offers significant advantages in flexibility and scalability, making it an attractive solution for small businesses, research organizations, and fleet supervisors. Professional experience from engineers having been part of larger OEMs and airline engineering teams attest to the scope for TelViz as a viable product in the market, and it is envisioned that interest in TelViz will be generated through Boom’s successful use of the system for XB-1 flight testing, development, and certification of Boom’s commercial airliner Overture, as well as through value-added services that Boom would potentially offer to airline customers with respect to airframe and engine health monitoring and preventative maintenance scheduling.
