Design of an Ultra-low Noise Ventilation Fan for Space Applications

Description
Ventilation fans play a critical role in spacecraft and space habitats, functioning as a key component in environmental control and life support systems. However, these fans have been grappling with operational noise issues, causing significant annoyance to astronauts and interfering with communication equipment. Over the past decade, NASA has actively engaged in noise mitigation efforts, particularly focusing on reducing noise related to rotor-stator interaction using techniques commonly employed in turbofan engines. In this program, Whisper Aero proposes a solution that leverages their novel ultrasonic fan design to create a highly efficient and ultra-quiet fan. The intended benefits include alleviating the production of annoying blade passing frequency tones, reducing structural-borne vibratory noise, cutting down fan weight and associated imbalance noise, and simplifying the mechanical layout for an extended operational lifecycle. Phase I activities will involve sizing and designing the fan based on NASA's requirements, utilizing Whisper's multidisciplinary optimization software toolkit. Additionally, aerodynamic and acoustic performance characterization will be conducted, along with addressing risks related to material selection, manufacturing, and evaluating viable motor options.
Benefits
NASA is planning several missions with astronauts to the Moon, Mars and beyond where quiet space ventilation fan technology would be applicable. Specific examples include onboard the Orion spacecraft as part of the Artemis mission, the Gateway lunar space outpost, and the planned transition from the international Space Station to low earth orbit habitats as part of NASA’s Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program. Other applications of this technology include NASA’s high performance computing centers where noise from cooling fans on server clusters remains an ongoing issue. Whisper Aero is committed to extending the use of its efficient and quiet fan/propulsor technology across a diverse range of industries, including aerospace, defense, industrial, and consumer products. While Whisper has successfully demonstrated the applicability of this technology in Group I and II unmanned air systems and is collaborating with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the electric leaf blower sector, the SBIR program will serve as a crucial catalyst for Whisper Aero to establish a presence in the household consumer market. This strategic move is particularly important in sectors where energy efficiency and noise emissions play pivotal roles. Notably, applications in kitchen and bathroom ventilation fans, as well as air drives in central heating/air-conditioning units, are of significance. These areas face increasing mandates to enhance performance, reduce energy consumption, and minimize noise, aligning with the ongoing push towards greener standards and sustainability.
