Investigation of Rydberg Sensor for Earth Science Remote Sensing

Description
We propose to investigate the potential application of an emerging quantum technology; atomic Rydberg microwave sensing; in Earth and Planetary Science remote sensing research. Through this study; we would gain fundamental knowledge of this innovative technology and evaluate its potential application for next generation remote sensing radar and radiometer development.
Benefits
This proposed technology enable active and passive microwave and millimeter-wave instruments that can study atmospheric processes and provide imaging for land and ocean surfaces with better sensitivity and scales than current technologies. These instruments cut across four of the five designated observables in the 2017 Earth Science Decadal Survey; including Aerosols; Clouds Convection and Precipitation; Surface Biology and Geology; and Surface Deformation and Change. This technology will also benefit Planetary Science and space communication missions.
