We propose to develop a predictive modeling-based decision support capability for the specialty crop industry to address the specific risks from flooding and water shortages and to effectively respond to associated events when they occur. The solution will leverage GeoVisual’s unique capabilities being delivered to the specialty crop industry today and build upon it a decision support framework driven by national data products and analyses from NASA and its cooperating partners. The system will combine nowcasting and forecasting products with agriculture production data to support growers, suppliers and associated stakeholders with risk mitigation, disaster planning and response.
NASA: The proposed system will also address a critical gap in national data products to supportscenario planning and incident response at broad scales. USDA’s Cropland Data Layer(CDL), which uses Landsat imagery plus annual grower surveys, provides yearly updateson what crops are grown on every designated acre of U.S. cropland. However, with anannual update schedule, the CDL does not provide accurate information on crops that areproduced biannually, such as vegetables and berries. The specialty cropland labelingcapability will be combined with a decision support framework that supports the ingest ofbest-of-class data and analysis products from NASA and its partners to support scenariomodeling and impact analysis. Anticipated NASA data sources include Landsat-8 forspecialty crop classification, and the MODIS Near Real-Time Global Flood Product. Our primary customer segment is the set of major specialty crop customers producingfresh vegetable and berry crops. Secondary customer segments include financialinstitutions associated with crop financing and crop insurance, which will stand to benefitgreatly from improved risk management capabilities as environmental pressures on theagricultural sector increase.
