Description
This project will quantify Plume-Surface Interaction (PSI) effects by developing a PSI ejecta kinetic energy estimation radar (PEKEER). PSI induced ejecta particles pose significant risk to landing vehicles; surface assets; and orbital assets. To date; there have been no direct measurements of PSI induced ejecta particle sizes; velocities; or kinetic energy on the lunar or Martian surfaces. PEKEER measurements will quantify PSI effects and will directly inform PSI modelling efforts for Entry; Descent; and Landing (EDL).
Benefits
This project will investigate the feasibility and critical function of a multi-frequency; PSI ejecta kinetic energy estimating radar (PEKEER) by completing proof-of-concept testing in a laboratory environment. The kinetic energy of PSI induced ejecta particles needs to be quantified to determine how to adequately mitigate these ejecta particles. Ejecta speeds and sizes must be measured to estimate the amount of energy these particles carry and to assess which mitigations will be successful and which ones will fail.
