On-Demand Production of Hypergols: Steps Towards Scalability

Description
This project will further develop the proof-of-concept testing done for the FY24 CIF: plasma production of hydrazine and oxidizer. The scope of this work will be confined to hypergols; with a focus to explore scalability of production for efficiency; operational considerations beyond proof-of-concept; and begin designing and testing system for higher sub-atmospheric testing.
Benefits
The team at KSC will explore the optimization of plasma production of hypergols based upon the results of the FY24 CIF exploring the proof-of-concept testing. The previous results had shown it is possible to produce hydrazine. Leveraging this work; the team will evaluate the plasma parameters to obtain the highest achievable production while adjusting gas flow rates; gas mixtures; and pressure. This will provide much-needed insight regarding feasibility and cost of scaling such a system. There is currently NO domestic source of hydrazine or monomethyl hydrazine in the United States. This creates a foreign reliance on fuels that may be impacted via politics; logistics; and lack of quality control standards.
