Adaptive Radiative Thermal Management with Solid-State Phase-Change Metamaterials

Description
This research aims to advance radiative thermal management system by developing a solid-state phase-change metamaterial that can adaptively control the spectrum of emission and absorption of radiation. I will use my knowledge of metamaterials and nanofabrication to design and test an ultra-lightweight material layer capable of spectral selectivity and dynamic switching from heating to cooling. The key innovation in my approach is to adaptively control emissivity and reflectivity in the solar and thermal-IR spectrum, allowing for the metamaterial to outperform conventional reflective/emissive structures. This approach will provide several key advantages over current thermal regulation technology used in small satellites, including reducing mass and power consumption, incorporating spectral selectivity, and removing mechanical actuation. The proposed advanced material could increase the thermal efficiency of future satellites, spacecraft, and extraterrestrial habitats where temperature regulation is essential to human survival. By collaborating with NASA, I will be able to work alongside leaders in the development of space technology as well as contribute my knowledge to develop this promising concept into the next-generation thermal management system.
