To support future missions, NASA seeks to advance the affordability and reduce the complexity of precision landing capabilities to deliver spacecraft to safe landing locations, particularly when the terrain is hazardous and lighting conditions are challenging.
The Nighttime Precision Landing Challenge No. 1, part of the NASA TechLeap Prize series, invited innovators to submit applications for the opportunity to win up to $650K and a suborbital flight test for sensing systems that can detect hazards from an altitude of 250 meters or higher and process the data in real time to generate a terrain map suitable for facilitating safe landing of a spacecraft in the dark.
This project stimulated innovation of technologies developed outside of NASA to support future NASA missions. These sensors would not have been available to NASA through any other method outside of a prize challenge.
