Au Release Layer for High-Angular Resolution Full Shell X-ray Optics

We propose ~150k in procurements to enable the development of an Au release layer technology for replicated full shell X-ray optics. Current fabrication processes result in optic circularity errors that are likely dominated by release-induced distortions. The Au release layer could reduce these errors, improving optical figure and advancing optical performance to the sub-arcsecond level. The optimized gold release layer has been applied to small-scale mandrels from which a NiCo replicated shell has been fabricated. Initial measurements indicate that the separation stress for a full shell optic has been reduced compared to the traditional fabrication process. In addition to reducing figure distortion, Au release layers also enhance the optic’s X-ray reflectivity, improving telescope sensitivity. The proposed procurements would include a new Au sputtering target and vacuum-rated rotary stage that can accommodate large-scale full shell mandrels in an existing system. Personnel effort will be contributed in-kind from ongoing ISFM work within the X-ray astronomy group.
