We propose to advance early development of a class of miniature, high resolution, time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOF-MS) with the potential to realize measurement capabilities far beyond the current state of the art, and to position GSFC for multiple relevant robotic and crewed planetary missions (Mars, Moon, and beyond). The Multiple Reflection TOF (MRTOF) mass spectrometer offers transformational specifications including (1) extremely high mass resolution (m/m) exceeding 105 (FWHM) to distinguish near-isobars; (2) miniaturization to ≤ 25 cm in length and 7-8 kg total mass, smaller/lighter than any competing instrument; and (3) ready coupling to advanced GSFC-developed front-end technologies, that together enable NASA-unique mission capabilities. The MRTOF represents the most ambitious mass spectrometer technology that solidifies the leadership role of NASA/GSFC in advanced measurements for future exploration, science, and hazard analysis scenarios.
