Integrated Logistics Technology Analysis Task (ILPPT)

STMD is supporting the Strategy and Architecture Office's (SAO) Integrated Logistics Pre-Project Team (ILPPT) in maturing concepts for conditioning and transporting consumables on the lunar surface from cargo landers to pressurized volumes. Logistics items include consumables, outfitting, maintenance and spare equipment, utilization (science, research, support items, etc), packaging, overhead and pressurized carriers for transportation, and storage. STMD is tasked with assessing current integrated logistics capabilities and identifying technology development opportunities across multiple phases of logistics operations. In this role, STMD team members provide subject matter expertise in the realms of cargo offloading, manipulation, and trash/waste management to support various trades and assessments.   A key deliverable of this effort is the development of an Integrated Logistics Technology Catalog, which effectively summarizes the state-of-the-art logistics-relevant technologies for consideration within the Moon to Mars Architecture. This catalog will serve as a trailblazer for communicating future pathways for technology infusion within other technical areas beyond logistics. The initial focus will be on the following specific technology areas,  as related to surface logistics operations:   • Cargo Offloading/Onloading - mechanisms, interfaces, seals, and automated handling systems • Autonomous Systems and Robotics - manipulation capabilities, mobility systems, and advanced perception/sensing • Power Systems - power generation, energy storage, and robotic connectors for logistics operations • Environment Mitigation - thermal extremes protection, radiation shielding, dust mitigation, and advanced coatings, impact protection • Surface Mating and Connections - fluid/power connections, connector mating/demating systems • Logistics Tracking - automated inventory and asset management systems • Disposal/Trash Management - volume/mass reduction and ISRU applications for waste processing

The Integrated Logistics Pre-Project Team is tasked with defining reference concepts for lunar surface cargo carriers, including crew portable and mated carriers. This includes developing plans for carrier packing, surface delivering , transportation, mating, and disposal of carriers and end-of-life items. Cross mission directorate collaboration is critical for accomplishing NASA's Moon to Mars Objectives. STMD provides the team with subject matter expertise and technology development and infusion potential to help realize future carrier concepts. Technology development timelines are assessed in relation to anticipated need dates for the lunar architecture. For STMD's role in the Integrated Logistics Pre-Project Team, four core benefits are shown below. 1. This is a mature technology (TRL 7+) — the realistic path in is usually NASA's Technology Transfer Program: licensing an existing NASA patent, or a Space Act Agreement to use NASA facilities/expertise directly. NASA also runs a startup licensing program with no upfront fee for companies formed to commercialize a specific NASA technology.
