The Space Storm Solar Sail Sentinel (S5) will demonstrate the use of solar sails as a means of propulsion, specifically how a solar sail can be controlled and maneuvered for navigation. The performance of a magnetometer in the space environment aboard a solar sail spacecraft will also be verified. S5 will be a secondary payload on the SOLAR-A mission (Dec 2029) on a trajectory to non-Keplerian sub-L1 halo orbit.
This mission validates all core technologies required for 1) demonstrating navigation with a solar sail propulsion system, and 2) verifying performance of a magnetometer on a solar sail spacecraft.
