Trace Contaminant Control (TCC) is typically activated carbon and some level of catalyst to adsorb and react contaminants in the air phase. The current state-of-the-art carbon dioxide (CO2) removal sorbents utilize amines that rely on a hard vacuum to desorb during an Extravehicular Activity (EVA). Some sorbents also act to remove some trace contaminants. This may be severely limited on Mars due to the atmosphere. Therefore, Mars will require new methods, sorbents, and testing of the current and new and novel technologies to assess feasibility on Mars. New technologies for regenerable TCC have been developed, but have not been tested in a direct manner. This project will complete a technology comparison of new TCC technologies for use in next generation spacesuit portable life support systems (PLSS).
The current TCC is a large consumable item, and multiple spares will have to be sent with downtime for replacements. The primary driver for a new technology is mass and lifespan. Volume is a secondary driver, as is pressure drop.
Multiple companies have produced TCC sorbents and CO2 removal technologies for the Space Suit. This project intends to evaluate these advanced technologies at a Mars atmosphere for infusion and down selection in the PLSS.
This project will verify that vacuum regenerable trace contaminant control sorbents and CO2 removal technologies will work in a simulated environment. Implementation of regenerable TCCs as part of the PLSS will reduce consumables and deliver a smaller lighter weight PLSS far more suitable for the Martian surface than current designs.
