Description

This concept proposes using approximately 10,000 actively steerable femtosats to map the composition of Saturn's rings, the composition and density of its atmosphere, and the distribution of its magnetic field. Each femtosat uses a fuel‑free actuation and orbital control system based on a single PCB motor and a non‑holonomic rotor, enabling precise steering and constellation formation using only electrical power. Unlike traditional reaction wheels, micro thrusters, or magnetorquers, this simpler and more agile fuel‑free system allows the distributed constellation to maintain formation and adjust trajectories without propellant. A single flagship mission conducting in‑situ ring surveys, such as Cassini, would face unacceptably high risk of failure from particle collisions; the proposed distributed constellation can tolerate the loss of many individual femtosats to particle collisions while still achieving mission objectives, making in‑situ ring survey feasible in a way a single large spacecraft could not.

This technology enables scalable, autonomous femtosat constellations for high-risk in-situ planetary science. It overcomes long-standing control and mobility barriers for femtosats, allowing for high spatial and temporal resolution atmosphere, ring, and magnetic field surveys, which have high scientific value but was not possible before with monolithic satellites or uncontrolled femtosats.
