For FY26, the proposed study is to conduct theoretical analysis and supercomputer simulations to predict lunar surface charging observables for when the Moon is in the solar wind and Earth's magnetotail, taking into account extreme space weather conditions.
The expected outcome include observables such as spatial profiles of the electric potential, plasma density, and electron energy flux. These observables will serve to guide (1) the measurement requirements and instrument placement for GSFC's Plasma Observatory for Lunar Exploration (POLE) mission, and (2) the development of a pipeline of instruments to perform lunar south pole plasma/field measurements. The expected benefit is for NASA/GSFC to lead lunar south pole plasma measurements, addressing directly to the Moon Base Program Phase 1 and the Executive Order 14369 Ensuring American's Space Superiority.
