Adaptive Controls for Active Structural Controls

Active

Description

Continue parallel work with AFRL on rapid concept-to-wind tunnel testing
-Conduct build-up flight experiments starting with rigid-wing vehicle
-Conduct powered flights with flexible-wing vehicle
-Develop initial adaptive control law strategies and test in tunnel/flight
-Iterate on model/control design based on wind tunnel and flight datasets

Benefits

- Cost-effective way to gather flight data on relevant technologies in a limited envelope
- Develop adaptive controls that make flight safer in the presence of plant/environmental uncertainties
- Enable testing of complex/novel airframe configurations quickly
- Validate autonomy-enabler tech
- Testing advanced controllers for long, thin, high-aspect ratio wings a key to the design of future long-range (un)manned aerial vehicles and fuel-efficient transports

How to get involved

This is a mature technology (TRL 7+) — the realistic path in is usually NASA's Technology Transfer Program: licensing an existing NASA patent, or a Space Act Agreement to use NASA facilities/expertise directly. NASA also runs a startup licensing program with no upfront fee for companies formed to commercialize a specific NASA technology.

None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
