Completed TRL 4 (started at 2, targeting 4)
Demonstrate two-speed drive system capable of 50% rpm reduction with less than 2% power loss while maintaing current power-to-weight ratios. This is accomplished through design and testing of unique transmission concepts capable of transmitting high torque through a wide speed range. A unique facility is developed to test scaled transmission configurations. New technologies to reduce drive system weight, losses and cost such as hybrid metal/composite gears, health monitoring, operation under loss of lubrication and reduce windage losses are explored.
The benefits are improved vehicle performance, empty weight fraction and safety through the demonstration of advanced multi-speed drive system designs and advanced component technologies. The benefits include an improvement in maintenance and operational costs.
Technology is most targeted at vertical lift drive systems, but has application to other geared systems, including automotive.
