System-level Uncertainty Quantification Method Development and Validation (HTP TC-1)

Description

The purpose of the System-level Uncertainty Quantification Method Development and Validation (TC-1) is to develop and validate a system level uncertainty propagation methodology to guide uncertainty-informed decision-making by identifying fundamental research areas that will reduce the system performance uncertainty.

Benefits

At the conclusion of TC-1, the first comprehensive hypersonic systems UQ methodology will be established. This methodology and any tools that are developed will be available to the hypersonics research community as well as a new knowledge of the impact of uncertainty on systems performance. This will allow for the establishment of a UQ standard for hypersonic systems. Tools will be made available to the community for use in ongoing and future projects.
Sources of uncertainty will be identified and the largest contributors to system performance uncertainty will be known. The conceptual design process can be improved by expending time and resources into areas that have the largest contribution to performance uncertainty which will add credibility to performance predictions, particularly for vehicles that are developed into operational systems. This should also decrease the incidence of expensive vehicle re-designs. Finally, experience and knowledge in hypersonic systems UQ will allow contract and mission / design requirements to be written to include uncertainty as a metric for performance.
