This project will demonstrate a new approach to Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) at GSFC GGAO (Goddard Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory) by making use of recently-developed high-sensitivity arrayed detectors. The project leverages in-house SLR, detector, laser, and communication expertise at GSFC, at an opportune time given recent demonstrations by LADEE/LLCD, the qualification of an efficient detector, and recent upgrades to GGAO for LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) observations.
Lunar Laser Ranging is an important contributor to our understanding of the lunar interior, and it is used to establish the solar system ephemerides; beyond planetary science, it also places stringent tests of General Relativity.
Our objective is to leverage recent technological developments to demonstrate a new paradigm for LLR. This new LLR approach may bring substantial science by enhancing existing LLR data, as the data volume and precision would be improved over current state of the art capability.
