Description
This research project is focused on developing high-capacity electrodes for use in batteries at temperatures as low as -80C, which will enable the creation of rechargeable batteries with higher energy density and specific energy suitable for use in space applications. The primary objectives of this research are to understand how high-capacity electrodes dynamically evolve under varying temperatures and in different electrochemical environments, and to control the chemistry and structure of electrochemical interfaces for improved kinetics at low temperatures. This research will be carried out via the use of electrochemical investigations, physical/chemical characterization of bulk materials and interfaces, and the development of new interfacial coatings. The knowledge generated by this project will establish the scientific and technological foundation for high-capacity electrodes with fast kinetics and improved electrochemical cycling stability at low temperatures.
