Intelligence in Motion: Re-embodiment, Trust, and Failure in Human-Robot Interaction

Description
Space exploration of the present and the future will increasingly involve humans and autonomous systems working together as distributed and co-located teams. My research examines the behavioral, technical, and design implications of re-embodied intelligence: artificial agents that migrate across multiple robotic bodies to achieve smoothness across multiple interactions in different contexts. This proposal describes a research plan for establishing human-system communication-related needs on human-robot space exploration teams, evaluating re-embodiment as a tool for recovery from failure in the context of space exploration, and designing for appropriate calibration of expectations for re-embodyable systems. The work pertains to Technology Area (TA) 4.4: Human-System Interaction.
