This is a follow-up early stage optimization study to combine both laser communication and science imaging functionalities into a single optical communication terminal.
Many applications can benefit from this dual-purpose approach. Optical communication is deemed as an essential part of forthcoming space systems, and the integration with a high-quality scientific imaging system makes it an attractive option for any application where space, weight and power constraints limit mission capabilities. In addition, typical challenges associated with high-volume data transmission are all but eliminated. Successful implementation of this dual-functionality will open venues to future NASA missions. There are also potential applications in the private and/or government sectors, as they, too, would be interested in modular systems that can simultaneously accommodate their data collection and communication link needs.
