Non-Contact Creep Characterization of High Temperature Materials for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion

Description

The objective of the proposed work is to evaluate the influence of spark plasma sintering (SPS) and selective laser melting (SLM) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and creep resistance of tungsten (W) and molybdenum (Mo).

Benefits

Development of NTP materials technologies supports MSFC’s Agency Designated Role: primary role in-space propulsion (chemical and nuclear propulsion) and selected crosscutting technical capability to develop power systems (nuclear fission/fusion) for thermal propulsion. Accurate creep properties for SPS- and SLM-fabricated W and Mo are nonexistent, and this data should prove useful for NTP feasibility studies and future designs.
