Assessing Kinetic Inductance Detectors for Future Missions

Description

To realize the promise of Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) in future missions, we must develop a calibrated, end-to-end model that can be used to optimize sensitivity and dynamic range for astrophysics applications. Goddard has several ongoing KID efforts that can calibrate different elements of the model. We will use this framework to consider requirements and design trades in astrophysics mission applications, with a focus on Mid- IR to Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) wavelengths.

Benefits

This effort supports the Galaxy Evolution Probe (GEP) and KIDs, which must reach TRL 5 by 2023. Origins Space Telescope (OST) will downselect between KID and Transition-Edge Sensor approaches by a Key Decision Point in June 2025. Fundamental work must be done now to prepare for these milestones, and support proposal work for Goddard leadership in the technology. Further, modeling work must be done in FY21, while complementary KID efforts are supported and in their characterization phase.
