Description

The Personalized EVA Informatics and Decision Support (PersEIDS) capability will develop interfaces, displays, and data science methodologies to enable Earth-independent biomedical decision making during Extravehicular Activity (EVA) given a model of the crewmember’s state (i.e., the Crew State and Risk Model [CSRM]). Visualizations and interfaces will be developed and tested to ensure relevant and actionable data for crewmembers, while decision support systems will provide extravehicular and intravehicular crewmembers and ground-based flight controllers with data-driven options and recommendations in the safe, effective and efficient planning and execution of autonomous EVA operations.

Benefits

Current International Space Station (ISS) Extravehicular Activity (EVA) operations are supported with ground-based flight controllers providing real-time crew health and performance (CHP) decision making with high bandwidth and near-zero latency for space to ground communications. Earth independent exploration missions will have communication latencies which will require more autonomous EVA support to facilitate time sensitive decisions. The Personalized EVA Informatics and Decision Support (PersEIDS) Project will enable autonomous EVA capabilities by augmenting the time sensitive, safety critical biomedical decision-making process in flight, allowing an in-vehicle crew to make complex decisions outside of the Mission Control Center (MCC). These capabilities are enabling for inflight crewmembers on Mars to fulfill the many critical EVA support functions currently performed by humans and systems in MCC, but they are also enhancing and possibly even enabling for high frequency EVA during lunar surface missions. Improved autonomous planning capabilities are required to enable high frequency exploration EVA.
